Transformative Learning through Social Action:
Models of and Models for Teaching Participatory Research
Community participatory research is a methodology rooted in the social psychology of group dynamics, adult education theories of critical consciousness and praxis, and is shaped by an ethical responsibility of researchers to develop roles as facilitators rather than experts. Participatory Action Research is a viable answer to the concern expressed by applied oriented students and professors that social research be politically relevant, responsive to community-identified issues, with action-oriented objectives that contribute to community awareness, empowerment and the ability to obtain desired goals.
This presentation provides “models of and models for” training and social action as developed and implemented in a university field methods program in Peru. Exploratory techniques of cognitive mapping, participatory facilitation, and team building exercises will be displayed, along with students’ comments and analyses of the benefits and challenges of experiential field learning.
Examples illustrate how such approaches may be adapted to ensure cultural appropriateness with regard to internal power relations, broaching sensitive issues, as well as confronting exclusionary practices of ethnic, class and gender discrimination. This poster demonstrates the potential of teaching community participatory methodology to engage transformative social processes that promote a more equitable, just and humanitarian society at local and global levels of human interaction.
